So, after a long hiatus that was due to computer issues and lack of actual time, I felt it appropriate for my first post to be the Phillies’ It Gets Better video. Fuck yes.
A film about Waldron’s experience is apparently in the works, titled The Ultimate Price: The Peter E. Waldron Story. While Waldron was in Uganda from 2002 to 2006, the Republican political activist was reportedly arrested with a small weapons cache. The details are murky but he spent more than a month in prison.
The surfacing of this name, tied to Uganda, got people wondering. And it turns out Waldron was spotted by happenstance while visiting the church of staunchly antigay, and dangerous, pastor Martin Ssempa. A journalist with The New Republic, Andrew Rice, bumped into them together while researching an article on evangelicals in the country.
Ssempa is well known for inflaming violence against gay people in Uganda, even screening gay porn to incite backlash. While no one is reporting that Waldron actively helped push for the “Kill the Gays” bill that is even now still being considered by the country’s parliament, Rice says that Waldron regaled Ssempa’s congregation with stories and seemed like a minor celebrity. Waldron spoke about his time in the military (which Waldron strongly implied was CIA related), his visit to the White House, and he bragged about being cozy with the Ugandan president. So yeah guys, this is SERIOUS news. Spread it around!
Pink Paper reports on the incident that occurred early Monday morning in Bloomsbury at the UK’s oldest and only bookstore dedicated to LGBT titles. Store operators suspect that vandals took advantage of the growing social unrest to unleash homophobic sentiments. Damage included a smashed window replaced at a cost of £1,300, and undisclosed stock damage caused by the pelting of eggs.
I should hope that they can. These people were there for us when we needed them, and we need to return the favor. We need to show the GOP that coming out in favor of Equality is more politically beneficial than relying on the support of the likes of NOM.
A great read from Andrew Sullivan in defense of Obama’s non-commitment on Marriage Equality.
A civil rights movement does not get its legitimacy from any president. I repeat: he does not legitimize us; we legitimize him. As gays and lesbians, we should stop looking for saviors at the top and start looking for them within. We won this fight alongside our countless straight family members, friends, associates and fellow citizens. As long as Obama has done due diligence in the office he holds - and he has - he is not necessary to have as a Grand Marshall for our parade.
This is not about him. So instead of treating him with anger or disappointment, give him a little touch of his own trademarked mild condescension at the White House reception today.
And wink back.
